A difficulty that New France had was having so little single woman. Most of the explorers, fur traders and soldiers were men but there wasin't a lot to attract single women to New France. If New France's population of men grew, single women would be needed to go there. The authorities made a decision to bring women to New France. Most of them were orphans who people knew as Filles du roi. The king provided them with transportation to New France. The king provided them with the transportation to New France, the settlement expenses and a sum of money and property. With encouragement from the church many of the filles du roi got married and most times drew clear marriage contacts before the marriage. In 1668 a contract between a woman named Isabelle Hubert and a man named Louis Bolduc promised to get married in the Roman Catholic Church as soon as possible. according to the French law they got married and all the stuff she brought into the marriage became became a joint property. Isabelle promised that she would bring money that was used in New France which was 400 livres. If the spouses broke up the woman would take possessions up to the value of 500 livres, if one spouse died the other spouse would take all the persons money and property. The filles du roi were an important part of New France, they caused the colony to expand fast and without theur hard work and motherly skills New France would not expand fast.
